MODERN PSYCHIATRY 400A

BY K. Edward Torkelson M.S. Pathology

June 16, 2000 (Friday @ 9PM

The patient

Predisposed?

Possibly a biochemical imbalance

How do we measure this?

We do not

So by trial-and-error chemotherapy

Which often causes the patient immeasurable suffering

We prescribe

Do we have a blood, urine, CSF or other test

For quantifying the endogenous chemical compounds involved

A cell culture might be the answer

With pluripotent stem cells each carrying the genome coding for the patient’s disease

Differentiated and typed into mini-brains

Sonicate them and assay the biogenic amines

Electrolytes and hormones

Which control mood fluctuations?

What is optimal brain architecture?

What is optimal brain biochem?

Directly quantify the aberration

Then treat to a Homeostatic normal function

The patient asks

Please Mr. Psychiatrist tighten the reigns

On run-away trial-and-error, side effect saturated horse of a treatment protocol

That is more often out of control than many patients.

Partnering With Patty D

By: Keith Edward Torkelson, MS: March 17, 2009

Now again a period for ups and downs

In a manner more fitting of equalizers

We no longer take Meds

Cause we are so scared of our Med free minds

I hear you started on lithium

Just wondering what you are on now

I read you’re a survivor

Meds actually are appearing to have yield better outcomes

And more likely than not the great experiments of trial and

Error and sides and …

May now close once and for all

And may we go outside and play?

Running about

To and fro about and under the son and sun

With highly prioritized measured portions of safer fun

As we reach above bio-physical waists

Onward toward our weathering heights

We might now require a few new governing statements

To slow us down into more secure landings

Setting down with no collateral

Statements of niceness, nurturing, and peace

Like chilling

What we do is good enough

Accepting first, changing later

Less may be observed as more

And: “There is enough (Moil)”

Turn our Excel-loraters into a Moder-ators as advocators

Evening out and about our Seas’ of Tranquility

Days of glass will have some waves

Yet, waves may turn to ripples “on the other side (G w/out PG)”

At the break - even demarcation

I’m still naively saying after twenty-five years,

We are our programmers

Data input with a hammer

Programmers we be: And

“The actors and jesters are here

The stage in darkness and clear

For raising the curtain and

No-ones quite certain who’s play it is (Stramp)”

Remember: Doris?

“What will be will be”

It’s just so hard many times to see

What John saw,

“The love you share is equal to the love … “ and just “Let it Be”

See: LOL if it is appropriate

New dawn each day

Empowerment, and

Writing to say

Dedicate the MHSA, to
Accept little less than cures

While reframing our ire, there’s a

New dawn on the horizon

Some say you only come alive

After your passing day

Dedicated to those who’ve passed

#2 = 33

Now is the moment, for

Excellence in heart

Working with those in need

Desiring to give

Attitude ascending

Wondering if all will be well, there’s a

New dawn on our horizon

#3 = 26

Nice out today

Enveloped in tranquility

Win/win is a way

Developing programs for better outcomes

Anticipating remedies

Wonderful news, for this

New Dawn

#4 = 37

New dawn each day

Empowering me on my way

Writing just to say

Develop and leverage the MHSA

Attending to our plan

Work as much as you can, there’s a

New dawn on its’ way

#5 = 31

New dawn each day

Ever asked the

Who, what, when, how, and why?

Do until we

Appreciate our

Whole Health, improving with a

New dawn to meet every day

DOCTRINE

Hello, my name is Keith

Been here for a while thinking

Yes what's that?

Oh that is my bird Grady

I’ve been trying to take good care of it

Yet it still pulls feathers out!

Yes it is rather smart

No, I really do not know what is behind it

What is behind it?

By ancient doctrine

I walk I talk very much also

The space still remains

I’ve tried to cheat, I think

Basic rule = smile a while

The more you jump into this mess

The less tangible it becomes

Complex of complexities

I took a clue from Freud and

In many respects I love the all

I thought what do I have to do to

Show them my love

Kisses, Presents,

A Porsche

I will listen for good tunes

I will help others

And I will wait.

Worthy?

FEAR (Exo-somatic)

By Keith E Torkelson

(April, 1988)

Now, we are talking about real ACTION!

Authentic fear

Monstrous melees, atrocities

Man versus man, again

America

By night

Mostly in the dense, pathetic cities

Knives, guns, hands

All seeking at one time or another

To tear my flesh

You know

As a time tested, dynamic

Avoidance system I have succeeded

To survive!

I have moved into a buffer zone

Of improved space, time and law enforcement

The avoidance system?

I will never give it up.

Even though with the geographical

I am not with in site or sight of a

Terminal TERMINAL

Joan

The Lady That Answered My Dreams (Needs)

By Keith Edward Torkelson

October 5, 2005

A long time ago

I remember I saw a lady

That lit a fire beneath my heart

I was scared to get to know her

Yet have always been grateful I did

Joan helped me open doors that would have never opened

With the little I have to love with

I love Joan

And always will

I’ve seen her pains

Many times

Yet nothing has hurt as much as

Seeing her pain and hurt as a result of me

I like to think back about the nice things we shared

Dinners at some very cool places

Walking in LA

And as you know,

“Nobody walks in LA”

We shared two musicals

One, Jesus Christ Superstar

Where her class took me in

Even in the face of years of medication related

Sexual dysfunction

Joan could still please me like

No other has consistently ever

I remember well the day at work

That she spun around and sealed my

Attraction to her

Joan and I have shared marvels:

Sunsets, days on the beach,

Walking through the mountains

Peaceful time at a monastery

Joan and I have shared miles

We drove to Mount Palomar

A trip that I have wished to make for decades

I drove at times with her to just be with her, driving

But most of all

If this is the last thing I get to give her

Then

I would like to say

Thank you for tolerating my problems

Enough that I could periodically thaw

Enough to enjoy and rejoice in your special life

Joan made it possible that I may

Love again

And I will begin by learning to authentically and persistently love my best friend

And potentially the only real friend I have

SHE TOUCHES ME

By Keith Torkelson

July 7, 1997

Awaken my lovely one

Good morning

Let us stop time again

You undressed damsel

These days I am happy, joyous and free

Moving in and warm

I am getting better

I appreciate and commit to you

Rediscovering you each morning

You are so alive, vibrant

It is a pleasure living with you

Your presence graces the world

You are there for me

Know I am there for you

Peace be with you

All my love, for my love

AN UNFORGETABLE MOMENT

By: Keith T. July 3, 1998

Just a blue eyed kid of 4 years

She, just a blue eyed 6 years old

She changed my life forever

She played teacher

She asked me to her parent’s bathroom

Saying pull down your pants, I did

She pulled up her dress and u-ware down

I saw her bare bottom

The image burned into my memory

One unforgettable moment

For better or worse I liked what I saw

She took it a step further

She said touch us together

Now rub

Some girls want it

And apparently want it young

The next day we did it again

In her backyard amongst the bamboo shoots

She said don’t tell anyone

She said we could never do it again

Why did she do this little experiment--pure science?

Why was I so fascinated--applied science?

I can see it clearer now

An unforgettable moment

THE LITTLE YELLA I CALL TRUCK

By K.T...Circa: 1980

Gasoline gone to my head

This truck is antique piece of lead

It never seems to get ahead

A real bargain for four hundred and one buck

Little Yella sixty-four pick-up truck

I thought it could bring me luck

There is no ridin in a car that won’t start

The electrical system is a work of art

Its’ carburetor runs best with rust

Starting by crank can be a must

I never get to work on time

Such a predictable line

Fred Flintstone take-offs combined with no speed

Indicates zero compression in cylinder three

This even after a valve-job financed by me

Service like this should be for free

Some radicals relieve their aggression on this Little Yella

There is a list of em I could tell ya

Frisbees, rocks and nurf balls bombard it steel shielding

Which day or night responds unyielding

A BB shattered the rear port

And there’s a firecracking wielding lunatic whom I would like to report

Old ‘64 is great for the ‘79 petrol shortage

It was equipped with odd AND even plates to gain portage

This Little Yella never heard of high octane

For all I know it runs best on propane

It smokes enough to cause an alert

I think to Shaler’s Rislone it’s time to convert

I’ve fixed more to ease this pain

A newer carb was quite a gain

Alternator for generator, inter-change

And a new master-cylinder for brake petal range

This truck has the basics if I am right

Quality sounds, big wheels and halogen lights

What a machine, a clean machine

Possibly for Harrah’s Museum but not for me

This moral is

Don’t you me mess with gasoline.
