An Ode to
Self Care
By Keith Edward Torkelson, MS – New and Improved – May 30,
2015
May 2015
In 2012 Buster
suffered catastrophic losses. Yet as
soon as he could he returned helping the Orange County Health Care Agency
(OCHCA) with their delivery about the Mental Health Service Act (MHSA). He found it necessary to terminate his formal
relationship with the OCHCA. It would
appear that he wrote this piece particularly for the OCHCA MHSA Calendar for
year 2016. This was also about the time
that he was winding down his some odd twenty (20) years relationship with his
Most Significant Other Ever (MSOE) Joan.
He and Joan parted ways in 2016. During
2015 Buster was engaged in a lot of assessment work including self assessment
and assessing others. Some of the themes
were anxiety, recovery, needs and perception.
In hindsight we actually find Ode to Self-Care humorous.

An Ode to Self Care
By Keith Edward Torkelson, MS – New and Improved – May 30,
2015
I really appreciate open air
My soul right now I will lay bare
I have a friend and she’s a bear
My music now a day I do not blare
I’d really like a cushier chair
I lived with others and a gal name Claire
I do and sometimes I do dare
At times I make a rather rare err
Events about are much more fair
Cause I’m leveling more of my fare
I have my lab coat returned to wear
Daily - I also enjoy meds that flare
My eyes they used to stare and glare
At present I have at least – one - treasured heir
I’m safe and cared for in my lair
Laptops – they & those - I have a pair
I set 3 times a day for my prayer
My thoughts at times are still quite rare
Yet basically
I remain easy to scare
Vis-à-vis I like to share
Even when I’m caught, trapped or snared
A mind I seem to have a spare
It fits quite nicely in a square
I stood atop-atop the stair
Up there I really never swear
Thousands of papers I’ve slated to tear
Their-There & They’re & There
My principles show times of ware
Now I ask U – How’s your Self-Care?

Version – 2015 for 2016)
By Keith Edward Torkelson, MS
New and Improved – August 26, 2015
46 Word Version
Story
After being with his Most
Significant Other Ever (MSOE) since 1998 Buster and his MSOE separated in
2016. Buster’s MSOE was developing
dementia. She had a fall and was taken
to the hospital. When she finally
remembered something it was the phone number of one of her two daughters. Her daughter came to California from Colorado
and rescued Buster’s MSOE. He wrote on
version of “SelfCare” for his MSOE back in 2015. By 2018 he took fancy to his Yoga
teacher. This version was the one he
shared with his Yoga teacher. Due to
Corona Buster will probably never take a Yoga Class with said yoga teacher.

Prose Before 1997
Buster was first introduced to
word processing back around 1980 while working full-time for Bell &
Howell. From 1982 to 1993 Buster was
attending UC Davis and had access to Word Perfect. Most of Buster prose up until 1997 was
handwritten. In 1997 Buster’s father
gave him his first Personal Computer.
The PC was running a word processing APP yet Buster cannot remember
which one. Sometime around late 1997
Buster’s father purchased and gave Buster a refurbished PC. It was running Microsoft Office. With MS Office Buster began word-processing
in earnest. This brief work would have
originally have been done on paper.
Who is AERIANA - 11-27-1992 ?
In
the fall quarter of 1992 Buster would have been back at UC Davis after a
medical leave. Back in the summer of
1986 Buster met Leanna Kielian. Between
1986 and 1992 Buster and Leanna kept in touch.
Somewhere around 1992 Leanna dropped in at Buster’s apartment and stayed
the night. Aeriana is what could have
happened if Buster were healthier. In
addition, Aeriana could be viewed as a fusion of Leanna and Mindy Lommer.

AERIANA
By Keith

11-27-1992
I never know
when it is good
Till it's gone
Never know it
is great
Till it's
great again
Sinuously she
snuggles so
Nearly makes
me forget
The big build
up and
Mutual
release,
Then she is
NOT!

Who Me? Corrected!
By KEITH EDWARD TORKELSON
May 8, 2004
I got up on that wall again
In time
Fell over that wrong side
Again
An attorney made a deal
For me
A DA partially slammed
A judge helped
Who me?
Keith Edward Torkelson, U
Corrected!
Living again?
My way out pushed further?
Up that line?
Girls on my mind
Hoping one my see in me
Her kind
Corrected
That what I exclaim
Really only part of the way
Deputy dog
Asked me
Where am I going?
And whom do I work for?
Me KET-U
Simply knows
I work for God
Under his liege named
JC “Superstar”
The rest of this mess in
My head
Subcontract under a few of the
Other eternals
Eternal yes?
Divine yes?
The passed, yes?
All my dad really stated in his
Thousands of words is
“Be a good Mormon”
Hey dad,
I’ve been corrected!
On a dozen facets
Yet I cannot even see my
Real face.
Dad do you see now?
Love always Keith (son)
Don’t cry cacophonous
Eyes
“My eyes have seen you,
Turn out the light”

Things Greater Than Us (TsGTU)
Our word count on this one comes
in just under the 50 word limited in the criteria. Most all of our work is written in
English. We know of a few in Spanish and
one in Russian. Even though we classify
this work under Stigma Elimination it really isn’t a very strong stigma
elimination piece. In the title we
consider Buster a PMHW. PMHW means
Paraprofessional Mental Health Worker.
Even though Buster was trained by the OCHCA for 160 hours Buster found
that further study was in order. During
the fall quarter of 2011 Buster completed two courses at a local community
college. He earned “As” in both
Introduction to Health & Human Services and Crisis Intervention
Management. Buster suffered catastrophic
losses during the first ½ of 2012. We
have discovered that we were in error that school is protective for
Buster.
Resilience
This piece was written specifically
for the OCHCA MHSA consumer calendar.
Buster tried his best to bounce back after 2012. During 2014 when Buster wrote the piece he
wasn’t even half way back on his feet.
We discuss The Big Fat Foot (BBF).
The BBF is a thing greater than Buster and the BBF mediates
instantaneous loss. The BBF can kill
you, whereas Mr. Take Away (MTA) mediates slow and miserably loss. Buster has won several times resulting in his
prose featured across several MHSA Calendars.
Over time the calendar process is growing as less elegant. Buster has also submitted artwork and crafts. There is another platform for consumer prose,
artwork and crafts. This is the annual
Meeting of the Minds Conference.

Did you see that foot?
In ’79 – smashed me flat
My heart stopped
My uncle retrieved me
Wow!
Did you see that?

In ’88 – smashed me flat
My mind was injured
My dad revived me

Calendar
Years ago in 2009 Keith Torkelson
MS began helping the County of Orange (HCA) with their deliveries about the
Mental Health Services Act. One of the
smaller efforts was the HCA sponsored yearly consumer driven calendar. He submitted both his original artwork as
well as prose. More often than not his
works in one or both areas was selected an published in the calendar. On or his early submissions was his drawing
(self-portrait) entitled “I Am”. From
the I Am calendar the county decided to make prints of the art from each
month.
Feature Images
Therefore there were twelve (12) prints made. Each work was printed in both a small format and a large format. Buster “I Am” in the large format was proudly displayed in the meeting-board room at the MHSA driven Center of Excellence offices in Santa Ana. The small “I Am” was sent to the MHSA funded Wellness Center (Central). Whereas other prints in the series can be accounted for Keith’s “I Am’s” have disappeared. Unlike many of Keith’s prose submissions where modifications to older pieces this on “A-Pen” was written specifically to submit for what appears to be the 2015 Calendar. Keith still agrees that “the pen is mightier than the sword”.
