Undergraduate English Paper
20171027-F: Insight Brief – UCD English Requirement – Literacy Autobiography
The date on the paper is March 8 1984. On this date we were attending UC Davis as a sophomore. Incidentally sophomore or Sophomoric can be interpreted as being Overly Confident. We gained quite a bit of confidence after our freshman year. By March 1984 we were progressing well in our major program Avian Science. At the time English One (1) was the required English course for our program of study. Literacy at the university had been proving difficult for me. Whereas we were mastering scientific reports during our freshman year, formal English, Humanities, and Philosophy papers were very hard for us. Our deficits root back to the tenth grade.
Honors English
In ninth grade we were put in remedial freshman English. After the first week we contested and were referred to link into honors English. We performed satisfactorily in ninth grade. Our strengths were Algebra (Hemmingway) and Oceanography (Big Adams).
Grade 10 – Mrs. Burchfield – World
The theme (unit) we remember most was world mythologies such as Greek and Hawaiian. Mrs. B assigned one reading to each group of 5 students so we could cover more material. She also had a class seating format where we sat in a big circle so one person could see 90 percent of their classmates at any given moment. This was the first time we saw Wendy J Stoffers in a class. Our strengths in the tenth grade were Geometry, Marine Biology, and World History & Art.
Grade 11 – Mrs. Nedrow – American
In grade eleven Mrs. Nedrow addressed multiple learning styles so if you were weak in let’s say Verbal you could make it up in Graphic. I earned most of my points in Graphic. It was in her class that I had a shortfall in reading. I began to regret not keeping pace we my reading. Hint to high school students – Devise a method to keep up with your reading. One of our strengths in tenth and eleventh grades was Politics. We were elected Junior Treasurer. Our big project was to deliver on the Junior-Senior Prom. We worked hard with Wendy, Mary, and Cindy on what turned out to be a really good event.

Grade 12 – Ms. Nelson – Great
Authors
By grade 12 we had lost specific interest and motivation. Social & Environmental factors were driving us nuts. When Ms. Nelson set her standards Kulle Lippand (Associate since the fourth grade), Gilbert Ramirez (Lived around the corner), and we made decisions. Kulle and we decided to stick it out. Gilbert transferred to regular English. Gilbert’s decision was the best. After the Junior-Senior prom Wendy set her sights on breaking up with us. When she actually did it we were in English Class. She took the ring we gave her, crunched it up in some paper, and thru it across the room. In the delivery she indicated to all in class that day we were done. Wendy was right for putting an end to things - Yet she could have prepared us one on one. When we look back on it we did a whole bunch of stuff with Wendy. Nine months or so after we parted she was still on our mind. While attending the University of California at San Diego we wished to celebrate her birthday. We made a card that we would never send to her. Some of our other artwork had indications that she was still on our minds. One day we will share the fate of the ring (class ring) we gave her.

We Never Did See Her Soon
I was bonding with Joan in 2000 that we substantially put Wendy behind us
We earned Bs in our Humanities
courses (Revelle College requirement) for a total 16 units (6+6+4). We felt for us it was a slaughter. We freshman (1977) enrolled in Humanities set
a new standard for incompetency about writing.
The teacher assistants (TAs) had to abandon discussing reading based
content to address most of us as remedial writers.

Special Topic - TOEFL Lived Experience
We entered UC Davis in 1982 as a
returning student to the UC system. In
1984 we decided to stay in affiliated student housing. We lived in the suite system. We shared one common room with three
bedrooms. Two double and one
single. We lived in double and were
assigned Takashi Kawamoto as our roommate.
We have lived we Foreign Language speakers before. Takashi was from Japan and was given one
quarter to test out of the TOEFL. Due to
his inability to communicate well in English he did not bond well with the
other four of us. One day he set off to
Sacramento some twenty miles away to the east.
He found himself still Sac after public transportation stopped
running. He walked home getting home
about four (4) am. Keith Yamamoto said:
Hey man all you need to do is call us: OK.
Takashi failed the TOEFL and had to return to Japan. For the winter quarter (1985) I we were
assigned Tom Simmons. One last note
Katie Morrison lived next door. Held

A Statement From the Department
of English Faculty (20171026-TH)
“We, the faculty of the UCD English department, stand against the politics of bigotry and willful ignorance. As citizens and educators, we are committed to opposing the normalization of these ideas and to defending the people most threatened by their material impacts. We pledge to act in solidarity with students who are targets of persecution, and we will refuse to comply with any institutional policy or action that explicitly enacts or tacitly enables such persecution.”

First Page Thesis Statement -
Erroneous
In the first page of the paper we
predict that the California Condor is doomed to extinction: We were wrong!
California Condor - Update
“By 1994, the captive condors had
laid more than 100 eggs. ... The condor population (wild and captive) has
steadily increased, reaching over 400 in 2015 (with over 125 wild condors in
California).”
Our Mentor – Doctor Ursula K
Abbott (UC Davis)
“From 1980 to 1987, field
investigations and management programs were undertaken, including radio
telemetry studies of birds and captive incubation of wild-collected eggs.” Doctor Abbott participated in this effort as
a Fertility and Hatchability Specialist.
