Integration with Joan

During 2005 Buster lived with his most significant other ever (MSOE) Joan.  At one point she typed out pertinent emergency information.  On the list she included her daughter Tonya.  We included the address as listed because Tonya has since moved.  Sometime circa 2017 Joan was rescued by her daughter Tonya.  Tonya living in Colorado took Joan in and tried to help Joan.  We will address more about Joan at a later time.

Replaceable & Resilience

We only grieve in depth about four or so peoples.  These people are Craig Edward Torkelson, June Elizabeth Torkelson, George Gerald Torkelson, Joan Zhorne and Joyce Maxine Brown.  In the future we will probably grieve only Lanaii Annette Kline.  Buster is highly dependent on Lanaii.  The majority of what Joyce (Aunt Joyce) offered Buster over the past eight years or so is not replaceable.  She freely gave or provided for the following: Monetary gifts, cooking facilities, special meals, cigarette subsidies, memories, and a high degree of family therapeutic value (ETV).  Buster did his best to avoid dependency about his Aunt Joyce.  In hindsight Buster somehow did not become dependent on his Aunt Joyce’s subsidies or facilities.  Most of the cash gifts from 2020 we did not include in monthly spending rather we have saved for when Buster needs to purchase a new Smart Phone.  Buster’s Aunt Joyce (AJ) would approve of buying either a Smart Phone or Tablet.  Between 2012 and 2020 AJ made good use of her Tablet.

January 30, 2017 (M)

On January 30, 2017 a Monday, Buster stopped by to visit with his mom’s younger sister Joyce in Joyce’s home on Mc Daniel Dr in Garden Grove California.  As he made his way through her haunts: Backyard table, garage smoking area, dining room and finally the family room he noticed how quiet it all was.  He found his Aunt sleeping in her family room “chair”.  She looked as if she had passed yet Buster could see a bit of movement in her chest.  She had often said if I am sleeping when you come wake me up.  Buster sat a few minutes falling sad then decided to let her sleep.  On that day Buster passed through Denial that his Aunt Joyce would die soon.

How is it Manor Care?

Back in 1998 Keith “Buster” Torkelson’s mother June Elizabeth Stoutenburg-Torkelson passed away in the Manor Care Facility in Fountain Valley California.  June is Joyce Maxine Stoutenburg-Brown’s (Aunt Joyce’s) only and older sister.  They were on and off rather close particularly due to the fact that they were small business owner partners.  For some switch of fate Buster’s commuting takes him by Manor Care on a regular basis.  On and off Buster stops by Manor Care to park in the shade and get some computer work done.  Sometimes he processes with his mom.  Before Aunt Joyce (AJ) passed away Buster determined that he needed a better place to process both mom and his aunt.  Buster decided on the parking lot of Fountain Bowl (bowling alley) since he his mom and AJ have fond memories of bowling.

 Returning the Favor

In 2012 Buster had a terrible year.  We call it a year of Catastrophic Losses.  When he was in the hospital he only had one family vistor.  That would be Aunt Joyce.  She came at least twice.  Each time she said I brought you a pack of cigarettes.  Over two visits that would equal a total of two packs of cigarettes.  When Buster was getting released they had trouble finding the two milk crates that Buster had brought with him.  Finally they decipherd the admit nurses scribbles.  They found Buster’s crates and to his surprise there were two cartoons of cigarettes.  When Buster hit the streets again he had no money, no car, no access to storage, no bus pass, the wrong medication, and no permanent GoodBed.  He found he could sell a pack of cigarettes for $5 each and get going day by day.  Thanks you Aunt Joyce Buster got started.  So when Buster learned that Aunt Joyce had fallen, broken her hip, and in the hospital he was blessed with the chance to return the favor.

Lobster Day – Age 89 – Buster’s Birthday 2015

Buster had been estranged from much of his family for several years by 2012.  When finally reconnected with his Aunt Joyce she was still quite functional and independent.  Between 2012 and 2015 Buster’s aunt gave Buster and sometimes Joan rides in her car.  The trip recorded in the photograph above was most likely associated with Buster’s birthday in March.  Aunt Joyce took Buster to all you can eat Lobster at the Red Lobster.  This was most likely the last trip in the car when she drove.  At later times AJ said Buster could drive her in her car.  Buster said no because he didn’t want anything to go wrong.  So Buster and sometimes Joan made the best of things meeting up at AJ’s house.  It was safer that way.  Buster is a worrywort and is treated for Anxiety Disorder.

Friday’s with Joyce

Somewhere around circa 2000 Buster was in the Secondary Teacher Education Program (SETP) at California State University @ Fullerton.  Content Area Literacy was a required course.  Buster’s teacher was Lynda E. Randall.  Buster grew a lot in general and specifically with reading and writing during the course.  He earned an A grade.  For pretty much each class session Dr. Randall would read from a book called Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson written by Mitch Albom.  The book discussed the “meaning of life and life's most important lessons”.  On the last day of class doctor Randall gifted her copy of “Tuesdays” to Buster.  She also said in front of the class that Buster DBA Keith Torkelson is “Brilliant”.  Buster prefers to be called Unusual.

Buster’s Aunt Joyce gave him a Failing about his education.  He would bring documents such as course performance and transcripts to try to help her see the reality.

On Succession

We will discuss the processes of succession later.  Yet, when a significant other passes and or leaves Buster we try to open a new door.  When Buster’s mom passed it was Joan his Most Significant Other Ever (MSOE) that filled the gap.  Actually Buster spent more time with Joan than any other in his adult life.  Aunt Joyce and Buster talked much about family.  Thus it would take family to fill the void.  Just this year 2021 Buster’s niece indicated that she wants to talk more.  So in a manner she will begin to fill the void left by Aunt Joyce.  One person cannot take the place of Buster’s Aunt Joyce.

Immediate Response

Buster’s Aunt Joyce AKA Joyce Maxine Brown (JMB) died sort of suddenly around December 21, 2020.  He decided to memorialize her via his Facebook.  He thought it best to get it done before Christmas 2020.  He gathered a JMB centered image pod.  We published on using Facebook December, 23, 2020 (W).  Longevity: Joyce Maxine Stoutenburg-Brown (1925_0529 Minnesota – 2020_1221 California).  We shared about 35 images in memory of JMB.  The Christmas that followed was Buster’s and many others’ first Christmas without JMB alive.  All but one of the people that saw our JMB centered Facebook post appreciated it.  RIP Love Keith Edward :0(

20201227-SUN: Defying the Tenets of Health - A Tribute 2 JMB

Window of Life: May 29, 1925 – December 21, 2020

Afternoon of December 21, 2020 Keith “Buster” Torkelson’s nearest aunt died in her home at the age of 95.  In her old age she defied the tenets or beliefs and principles of health.  In the last five years other than taking life sustaining medications she fell and broke her hip.  Some of the family didn’t think she would return home.  Then later she fell and received a nasty head injury.  Once again she managed to return home.  One risk she took not associated with age was she smoked cigarettes.  The reason she said they were less harmful for her is that she “didn’t inhale”.  In May of 2020 due to Corona concerns for all practical purposes “Buster” could not see her close up anymore.  This is significant because basically Aunt Joyce was deaf.  The distance cancelled any high quality communication.

History That Deserves Remembering

“Buster” and Joyce separated on good terms.  One of her final wishes was that “Buster” not be sad over her passing.  Actually that would mean not to get too sad – who in the world could not get sad over the loss of such a significant other.  As she said: “We did well Keith Edward”.  This paragraph and photos are tributes to “Buster’s” beloved aunt – Joyce Maxine Stoutenburg-Brown.  She leaves two children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  When she passed at age 95 she was the longest lived in the Stoutenburg (Matriarch), Brown (Patriarch) or Torkelson (Patriarch) lines.  “Buster’s” grandfather Torkelson lived until age 94. Her service has yet to come.  “Buster” definitely would only read excerpts from this at his Aunt Joyce’s funeral.  Aunt Joyce is “History that deserves to not be forgotten” (Avey C Asus, 2020)

Healing her broken hip – Skilled Nursing Facility

2015 December

On the mend for her broken hip Aunt Joyce (AJ) was placed in Coventry Court on Euclid Street in Garden Grove.  They had a plan to keep her for a while for physical therapy.  At one point she said I can do this at home.  She basically released herself.  She reported as she was headed out the door they rushed to execute a release of liability form.  Buster is rather gloomy when it comes to hospitalization.  He figured she would be residing at Coventry for quite some time.  AJ was correct when she got home she was back to her activities of daily living.

Laura Adams V Joyce

Laura Adams, PsyD & MFT

How is it that Time Spent with Joyce was more effective than Time Spent with Laura Adams.  In both instances Buster needed support solving problems.  He also needed to know when his coping methods were exhausted and he needed to ask for help.  The help needed to be effective.  Where Buster would spend 50 minutes with Laura he would spend three hours with his Aunt Joyce.  Together Joyce and Buster solved many problems, whereas Laura and Buster made little progress.  At the time Laura was engaged with psychodynamic therapy.  Near the end of the session she would tell Buster that he was not doing things right.  We will cover more about Laura Adams at the time MFT in the next installment.
