20180207-W: Insight Brief –
Geology
In Spring Quarter of 2001 we were
preparing our application for the California State University @ Fullerton
(CSUF) Secondary Teacher Education Program.
In the process for landing an interview with CSUF the Biology Department
Chair at the time, Barry Thomas, with us reviewed a portion of our Curriculum
Vitae. Our Science Course Success
Checklist constituted about fifteen or so Science Courses necessary to qualify
as a Secondary Education Science Teacher (SEST). Mr. Thomas found three (3) gaps.
-
Further Study Required
Previously, we had not taken:
Botany, Earth Science or Geology. He
said our Microbiology Mycology element might suffice (fudge) for Botany. Then he said two things: You are a
Biologist! Take Botany – You will enjoy
it. Doctor Thomas directed: You will
have to take and succeed at Earth Science and Physical Geology. At Saddleback we broke our ice by Acing both
INTRO TO EARTH SCIENCE and CIRCUIT WEIGHT TRNG (Fall, 2000). We were class high for Earth Science. Our confidence was building nicely. Since 1999 we had held down work as the Chief
Financial Officer (CFO) for our Family Business. [FIND LINK FOR BOTANY RELATED - Done]. Our total school-load for Spring of 2001 was
Plant Diversity/Genetics (Botany), Introduction to Physical Geology, and
Supervised Tutoring. We didn’t have a
need for the tutor. This time around we
did not repeat our UC Davis Sleep Error (UCD-SE).
-
Promise
-
When we picked up our Exams at
the end of the Semester we promised Doctor Borella that we would not share them
with anyone. It has been more that
fifteen (15) years. We feel that it is
OK to share.
-
-
Lesson Learned
Doctor Borella let the students
pick the day for the first midterm. He
would say: Are you ready for the mid-term next week. Over half of our classmates kept saying no! Thus a midterm that might best have been in
February was set off over and over. As you
can see we actually had in on March 29th. The result was we only had one midterm.
-
Invite to Be a Geologist - Switch
Biology to Geology
When we went to pick up our final
both Repka (Earth Science Teacher) and Borella indicated we would make a good
Geologist. They said give up on
Biology. At the time we did not know
that Doctor Borella had his own Small Business.

Email Deletion Assignment
One day we visited Doctor Borella
in his office. He indicated he was
having trouble managing his e-mail. He
asked: Hey! Will you get rid of my e-mail for me? I said OK and moved them to trash. Then I asked are you sure you want them
gone? He said – Yes. So I permanently deleted them from
trash. A week later he said I need some
back. I said “OK but No!”
-
Current Interests
We will just list some of our
current Geological Interests. To even
address one of them would cause us to miss our publication deadline.
-
LIPs-Large Igneous Protrusions
Siberian – Deccan – Columbian – One in South America
Yellowstone Caldera
Mono-Mammoth
Amboy
Lassen
Calcium Series
Calcite > Limestone > Marble

Doctor Borella’s Rating
Our calculations indicate that
Doctor Borella for us is a 4.1 Star Teacher yet we still feel he earned and “A”
or 5.0 Stars.

We have a new Geology Teacher
this Winter Quarter. He works for Central
Washington University. His name is professor
Nick Zentner. We sat in his digital
classroom for an hour while he discussed new research on the Columbia River
Basalts. Here is an FYI Link.

FYI - What Others Said About You
Peter Borella at Saddleback
College - RateMyProfessors.com
Borella is a great guy, but will
call you out if you aren't trying. He loves to see people put in effort and ask
questions. His tests are HARD essays. However, if you show him you're trying,
he will pass you. Go on every field trip he tells you. Also if you do a trip,
write a little report about the geology of it, he will possibly give you Extra
Credit.
